THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION OF 1835-
IN the year of 1835 voter's decided to hold a constitutional convention thyat would address the problems. The votes changed dramatically from one side of the fall line to the other, with the west voring yes, but the east voting no. THe best leaders from both the west and east came to Raliegh in 1835 to ammend the 1776 constitution. Becuase the writers of the of the 1776 constitutionnever considered that free black men might vote, such men of color had been able to go to the polls. This was forbidden in the 1835 polls. Suffrage was also taken away from the Native Americans, such as the Lumbee. In 1776 constitution had allowed Protestant Christians to hold office. Since the balance of the population had shifted more to the west, the admendments were approved.

Although traditon says Carson was born in Kentucky and raised in Miri, the Carson family has always claimed that he was a North Carolina native. The Carson family had settled near the present town of Harmony in Iredell County after the War of Independence.
